OM, believe, I did not overlook Big L’s first as that is in my top 10 list for sure. As for Rick, I haven’t heard of him, and don’t even want to. Finally, lists tend to be taste matters as I heard that Reggie’s “Muddy Waterz” LP was classic, but actually wasn’t a fan. At any rate, I cannot deny that your list has a couple gams.
let me be upfront. I do not like this because of the selection, although I sure do admire your design, but, I suppose you expected dispute, which is why, I won’t take that adversarial approach. I do approve of much of the list, but as per usual, the consolation prizes present problems, for instance, classic albums I’ve heard include Kool G Rap and Polo “Live and Let Die (1992) and Ice Cube, “Death Certificate” (1991). Meanwhile, I would rate Illmatic much higher (not to say that you are not with justification, as I do appreciate how sales was not a major factor in the final list.) Also, what did you think of Masta’ Ace’s “Take A Look Around (!990)?.
BTW, I prefer Em’s “The Eminem ShoW” but to see that his slaes matched Pac is incredible, whislt seeing the Beastie’s sales, I feel compelled to follow, sheep-style. Also, well-done BIGGIE on those 10 million. You sure were “eating”
@ omalone1, I don’t mind dispute and perhaps the list should have been the top 50 instead. I know that many things are based on professional and personal perception and I respect your opinion. As regards Masta’ Ace’s “Take a Look Around (released July 24, 1990) I HAVE to bow down to you on that one, this was a masterpiece but then, I would have had to also add Big L’s 2 albums Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous (1995) and his postumous “The Big Picture” (2000). In comparison, Masta Ace’s album was banging because of the samples combined with his lyrical ability but Big L was just lyrically deadly not only in delivery but also content, even accapella.
My next outing perhaps I will just post a legends piece and see what kind of response I get! I think that is going to have to be a top 100 though. Lastly, despite the entries of Tupac and Biggie, My PERSONAL favorite is the Wu Tang (36 Chambers) over everyone actually on the list but since of course the deciding factors were based on a combination of different things, they didn’t get top top billing.
Here is my take on lists LOL, there is ALWAYS a valid argument for the addition or subtraction of someone from a list and I just look at them subjectively. I mean MTV named Rick Rozay “Emcee” of the year! THAT was total hogwash and it’s a wonder that group doesn’t need bodyguards. First of all, in my opinion to call him an Emcee is just sacrilege, hell that is like calling me a DJ because I can play songs from an MP3 player.
As always, it is an honor to have you weigh in on ANY of my posts! #salute
