Eve On Her Comback Album ‘Lip Lock’ & Rap’s New Female Stars | @RadioDotCom

The last time Grammy-winning rapper Eve released an album, neither Facebook or Twitter existed, Fergie had just joined the Black Eyed Peas and The Eminem Show was the best-selling album of the year.

The year was 2002, and Eve was still riding high on her GRAMMY win for the first-ever Best Rap/Sung Collaboration prize with No Doubtsinger Gwen Stefani, “Let Me Blow Ya Mind.” Her third album, Eve-Olution, would peak at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 album chart, thanks to the Alicia Keys-assisted, No. 2 single “Gangsta Lovin’.”

Now more than a decade later, the woman once known as the “First Lady” of the Ruff Ryders hip-hop crew led by rapper DMX is back with her fourth album, Lip Lock, released last week (May 14) on her own record label, From The Rib.

“All of my decisions are tough right now, because it’s me,” she toldRadio.com, adding that she now has the final word on everything from music videos to choosing her singles. “But I still have a huge support system. I have an amazing team of people. Not that I didn’t have that at Ruff Ryders, but there were extra hangers-on. I don’t have hangers-on like I used to. It is more of a business now. I love it, I think it’s fun. I definitely know a lot more information than I ever thought I should know!”

The new album, Lip Lock, feels very big. Was that intentional?

With this album, there were two things. One, lyrically, I definitely wanted people to recognize me. But then musically, I wanted it to be global, because I do travel a lot. I guess it is bigger it some sense. I just wanted a global sound.

Nationwide (BlackNews.com – Press Release) — With Barack Obama’s landmark second-term well underway, Sonia Grant’s polemical book Before Barack is an unvarnished look at other black presidential candidates, designed to put his achievement into historical perspective.

But, she argues, more significant than the nuts-and-bolts of the individual campaigns of Blanche Kelso Bruce; George Edwin Taylor; James W. Ford; Charlotta Bass; Clennon W. King; Dick Gregory; Eldridge Cleaver; Angela Davis; Reverend Jesse Jackson; and Reverend Al Sharpton, outlined in her book, were the conditions which gave rise to their candidacies. Indeed, it was America’s unprecedented social upheaval – spanning slavery, reconstruction, domestic terrorism, race riots and Segregation – which paved the way for Obama’s ascendancy.

However, in terms of race, Grant contends that America still seemed conflicted. Despite hard-fought gains borne out in the Civil Rights Movement, for instance, centuries of systematic and deep-seated racism still haunted; and, on occasions, the nation was schismatic and betrayed signs of polarization.

Nonetheless, she observes that many optimistically hung on to the notion that the election of the country’s first black president was transformative; indeed, it was, but Grant suggests it also proved to be as revelatory as it was historic. To that extent, Before Barack is a lens through which the confluence of race and power is examined in the context of America’s eventful social and political history.

An accessible narrative, the book charts the trials and triumphs of the black presidential candidate: beginning speculatively in the nineteenth century; approached earnestly in the twentieth; but only destined to be realized – or not – in the twenty-first, with the election of Barack Obama.

Robin Thicke Talks ‘Unrated’ Video | @RadioDotCom @robinthicke

Robin Thicke is known for his soulful music but this time around it’s his music video that’s making headlines.

The unrated version of “Blurred Lines,” which Thicke premiered April, features several women sans clothing. YouTube quickly banned the naked clip, but not before it racked up more than one million hits.

“We just had a great feeling about the song,” Thicke told Carson Daly. “I made it last summer. I mean, I had it for about eight or nine months and Jimmy Iovine liked it, but nobody was really jumping all around the place for it.”

“And then we shot the video and Jimmy called me seven seconds into the video and he said, ‘This is a smash! This video is amazing!’”

“We had always planned on making an unrated [version], we like to call it. Not X, it’s just unrated,” he said. “So what we would do is shoot a segment with the girls dressed and then they would take their clothes off [and] we’d shoot the same shot.”

The 36-year-old entertainer got approval from his wife, actress Paula Patton, before going ahead with the racy shoot.

“The first time we saw the video, she watched both and we liked the dressed one so much, we were like, ‘Maybe we don’t need to do this with the naked one. Maybe it’s going too far,’” he explained. “Then we showed it to about 10 of our friends and they all were like, ‘Oh my God!’ So we put them both up.”

Darius Rucker Digs His Boots Deeper Into Country | @RadioDotCom @dariusrucker

“It’s not the twang that makes it country, it’s the lyrics,” Darius Rucker told Radio.com. “Country music for me is being able to tell a story.”

Rucker knows this firsthand, as he grew up entrenched in country music and is releasing his third country album, True Believers, today (May 21). In our Radio.com Essentials profile, Rucker broke down country music stereotypes and explained the stories behind many of the songs on his new album, while Entertainment Weekly‘s Grady Smith provided some back story on the former Hootie & the Blowfish singer.

It’s a common answer to the question, “What type of music do you like?”: “I like everything but country.” But Rucker, who himself encountered great success in the mainstream with rock before segueing to country, pleas with music fans who respond this way.

“To have that stereotype of my dog died or my wife left me, that whole stereotype that they love to live with,” he explained, “every time I hear somebody say that ["I like everything but country] I say, ‘Take one day and listen to country.”
