Converse Open Gym Mixtape Vol. 2
Philadelphia, PA (November 2011) Since 2007, over 50,000 kids have spent a Saturday afternoon playing basketball at a Converse Open Gym event. Open Gym is a program where kids in six U.S. cities can come into a safe and fun environment to play a couple of pick-up games of basketball with their friends and other kids. In the summer and fall of 2011, Converse Open Gym sessions were held in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Miami, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. In keeping with the Converse brand’s outreach efforts to provide fun and positive opportunities for the youth of America, the Converse Open Gym Mixtape Series was commissioned.
According to Converse Brand Manager, Rahim Thompson, “The mixtape gives independent artist an opportunity to expand their audience in markets that they wouldn’t normally have access to, along with giving the converse brand even more recognition among the hip hop culture.”
Produced by Tony Brown aka DJ TRUUF- Official Converse DJ since 2007 and hosted by industry heavyweights like Shawty LO, a Converse Mixtape is scheduled for release each month to coincide with the CONVERSE OPEN GYM schedule in all Markets. DJ Truuf states that, “After 4 years of progression while working with The Converse Open Gym Program, I’m very proud to introduce the Converse Open Gym Mixtape. This Mix-Project will add a new dimension to the Converse Brand by allowing Independent MCs the Opportunity to be heard on a major platform along with artists like Wiz Khalifa, Jim Jones, YMCMB and more. This is one of my most ambitious endeavors ever and I’m proud to be able to offer this opportunity to the Independent Artist who is ready to be heard on a Global Stage with Converse as the backdrop and dats da truuf.”

That’s Open Gym, and since its launch in November of 2007 over 40,000 kids in Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia, Miami and Boston have come over to play. In Atlanta, 500 kids are showing up every other weekend to B.E.S.T. Academy and Georgia Tech to play, meet our athletes—and each other, customize product, get a free haircut from our barber, eat free healthy snacks, get snapped in our photo booth, and generally be part of the game we’ve always loved.
