Born and raised in New York,(HARLEM) Petawane (pronounced Pee-tah-wayne) began singing in the church at the tender age of six. It was around this time he began putting on impromptu performances at the request of his Dad to entertain his friends. It was through his love for the music and the response he would get each time he delivered a note that made him realize he wanted to be a performer. He has embarked on a mission to fulfill his dream ever since.
Founded 8 years ago, it’s time to celebrate, as Elementz, the Urban Arts Youth Center located in Over-the-Rhine, presents its 8th Anniversary Celebration Open House on Thursday, March 21st, 2013. This urban arts extravaganza will run from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in our new home at 1100 Race Street, one block south of Washington Park.
Elementz invites you to come enjoy positive Hip Hop music, thought-provoking poetry, stunning graffiti visual art and jaw dropping Hip Hop dance performances from some of the most electric, stunning and talent young artists from across our city. A $10.00 admission fee helps support ELEMENTZ programming and helps support young inner-city artists. Last year more than 300 people enjoyed the Celebration Open House, and supported Elementz at the same time. Come to the Open House this year and see what they’ve all been talking about!
Creative Director Abdullah Powell, “this event will be a great opportunity to see the quality of performance done by local youth who are learning new expressive skills in a variety of urban art forms”. Board President Peter Block says “I am personally energized each time I listen to the stories told by these young men and women as I listen to their music and watch their dancing”.
About Elementz
Born out of the racial demonstrations of 2001, local Over-the-Rhine community organizers decided to address the need for a safe place for urban youth. Initiatives including “Cop Watch” and “Power Players” were initiated in February 2002, and a standalone arts center for urban youth called “Elementz” was launched in February 2005.
This year as we celebrate our 11th year of community engagement, Elementz is a vibrant youth center dedicated to promoting urban art, including Hip Hop, R&B, Spoken Word and Stepping. We serve over 200 youth who are members of the center and come on a regular basis to our programs. We also touch hundreds of additional young people through our outreach to schools and youth institutions with our message of urban-inspired art and respect.

(portaltaxi.net/music) – The original lead singer of the Kingsmen, Jack Ely (pronounced e-lee), has released his most recent LP album, a modern gospel record called “Love Is All Around You Now.”  The record includes thirty six minutes of spirit-filled music from one of rock ‘n roll’s most influential rockers.  “Love Is All Around You Now” is free from all pretense, every lyric penned with obvious earnestness and passion for the underlying meaning and mission.  Composed with the complexity and humble intellectuality that characterizes much of the music written in the nineteen-sixties, some of the tracks on “Love Is all Around…” sound like folk anthems not unlike the best of Dylan or Baez, while others sound more like psalms of praise and worship no music listener will be surprised to hear in progressive churches even thirty years from now.

The record is not-at-all without backbone, however, which should not surprise fans of Ely himself, whose fame is largely garnered from the unstoppable, legendary classic rock single, “Louie, Louie,” recorded by his original band, the Kingsmen, in 1963.  The record has elements of funk, as in the fourth track, “Since the First Time I Touched His Hem” (an allusion to Biblical miracles worked by Christ when afflicted persons reached out to touch his robe), as well as elements of groove, as in the title track, “Love Is All Around…,” and there are – naturally – elements of low, low-down blues rock, as in “See the Light.”

Japanese producer Kut teams up with DJ Instynctz for Street KhemistryDJ Instynctz and Kut the Producer team up to bring the worlds of U.S. and Japanese Hip Hop together.

In one of my Yahoo! Voices articles, I talked about Hip Hop still impacting music worldwide and Street Khemistry 8 just proves my point in a major way. Brought to the table by DJ Instynctz for his Street Khemistry series, Japanese producer Kut serves us a huge dose of verifiably real Hip Hop tracks, which act as the music bed for some of the most deadly delivery of lyrics by artists from two different continents.

Those in the know are already hip to DJ Instynctz and his insane mixtape compositions and as the official show DJ for rap artist Torch. Instynctz’s “Street Khemistry” series has blessed us with some of the cream of the crop in the world of Hip Hop.

DJ Instynctz was raised in the North East Bronx and was influenced by the sounds and styles of urban life in New York City. His curiosity led him to explore his older brother’s vinyl records and he became interested in Hip Hop. With his brother’s records and a belt drive turntable he fun a way to express himself creatively.

DJ Instynctz aka Mr Problematik Status can now be seen energizing a club with his diverse arsenal of genres, making the airwaves sizzle with signature mixes, exclusive interviews and quality mixtapes. He’s now one of the most sought after mixtape DJs with a growing catalogue.

Kut is a Hip Hop producer from Tokyo bay area of Japan. He started out in Tokyo spinning parties but soon he purchased his first sampler and began making tracks on his own. Shortly thereafter, he quit Djing in favor of production. Kut has spent time in various U.S. cities, absorbing the vibes and techniques from various studios including New York’s D&D Studios.

After returning to Japan, Kut took a break from production but that didn’t last long. MC Nyche from the Bronx had connected with Kut while he was in New York and when he got his distribution deal with Universal, he got with Kut to produce “Ziplock” feat. Cam’ron and Fred the Godson as a single from the album project. Now he’s produced and worked with the legends Marley Marl, Talib Kweli, and Fiend, in addition to Cam’ron Fred the Godson and more.

Kut produced 11 of the 17 tracks on DJ Instynctz’s Street Khemistry 8 including the aforementioned “Zip Lock” by Nyche.

One of my favorites from this set is track 8Friday Night” by Lil Lexy (Prod. by Kut), the driving beat and evil sounding synths are a magical match for Lexy’s singsong flow, she works really well with this joint.

On a whole other side of the coin is the old school snare and clap flavored “Thirst Cream” by Reynos (Prod. by Kut) which is track 8 of the mix. I was feeling track 3New Jap Swing” which is a mashup of some Rhianna vocals fit in between some cold ass riffs by Japanese Hip Hop Heads Knell, Naoya, and Dizzy Doeswell, DJ Instynctz CLOWNED ON THIS MIX!!!

I enjoyed the Japanese flavor to the familiar yet original grooves and I can’t for the life of me figure out how the hell they can make that language sound like it belongs to Hip Hop naturally! These cats are good!!!

If you have ever been to a underground set like Project Blowed in LA, Dragon’s Den (also LA) or the Wet Joint hosted by Joint One DJs, Joey Slick, DJ Kev and The Shuzz, then track 4Play on” (Prod. by Kut) by Gee Dubs is going to take you home with some real certified Hip Hop flavor, usually reserved for those exclusive underground spots.

Overall, this is one of the most original, solid mixtapes I have heard in a long time, while I won’t be corny and say I don’t have any favorites because the are all so good that I can’t pick, I AM going to #COSIGN this mixtape as one worth having and keeping.

You don’t have to understand all the words to appreciate the artists and production value…don’t trip Cam’Ron isn’t ripping in Japanese!!! This is a great mix and kept me rocking for 17 straight tracks…track 17 is actually a bonus trackThe Jig’s Up” by Kwan Lee (Prod. by Kut). Yeah that one is special too…Kut brought out so many weapons on this track, I KNOW we are going to hear his name on the regular here in the States real soon.

In my opinion, there HAS to be a part 2, 3, 4….I couldn’t get enough of this mixtape…good stuff…trust me.

Follow@DJInstynctz and @KutTBA  on Twitter. Check out StreetKhemistry.com for some of the hottest joints, videos, etc,…DJ Instynctz and crew have got your daily fix!

DJ Instynctz can be heard live every Saturday from 8-9 pm EST on Swurvradio.com

RATING: 4/5 fists!

Magnificent Limited Edition Box Sets of Band’s 29 Singles on Legendary Casablanca Label

Available December 4

LOS ANGELES, CA–(Marketwire – October 31, 2012) - Rock legends KISS were the first signing to the late Neil Bogart‘s newly formed Casablanca Records label after he saw and recognized their talent and showmanship during their spectacular performance at a showcase concert at New York City’s Le Tang’s Ballet Studio in 1973, offering them a contract on the spot. Now, KISS celebrates their 40th anniversary in 2013 having broken box-office records set by The Beatles and Elvis, more than 28 U.S. gold albums — the most gold records for any American rock band — 40 million sales in the U.S. and a total exceeding 100 million worldwide.

In their early years, KISS released a total of 29 singles on seven-inch 45 RPM records for the Casablanca label. These were available for sale to the public, used for commercial radio airplay and to promote album sales. Many of these singles had entirely different mixes, edits and material that didn’t appear on their vinyl albums. Now for the first time, these musical snapshots of KISS’ formative years, which have never been available in a commemorative singles edition, will be released in two box-set configurations entitled The Casablanca Singles 1974-1982, on Dec. 4 from Mercury/Casablanca/UMe:

29 Seven-inch vinyl (Limited Edition available direct to consumer via www.universalmusicenterprises.com/select)
29 CDs (available through all retail outlets)

In typical KISS fashion, these are no ordinary boxes. The sets are housed in a beautiful die-cut shadow box with a limited edition, etched silver metal plate and ribbon-pull magnetic closure, custom KISS 45s box with 26 collectible picture sleeves from original single releases around the world, including Japan, Germany, Holland, Spain and Britain. The vinyl collection also features singles from all four solo albums in purple, blue, red and green vinyl with a picture sleeve representing each individual member as originally released in the U.K. Both sets include a booklet which tracks the genesis and chart history of each single represented in the package and four individual KISS masks.

The Casablanca Singles 1974-1982 covers KISS’ remarkable eight-year stay on Bogart’s label, from their very first single “Nothin’ to Lose” b/w “Love Theme from KISS,” from their self-titled debut, to their very first charted 45, “Kissin’ Time.” The band’s subsequent string of hits included Dressed to Kill’s live version of “Rock and Roll All Nite” (No. 12 on Billboard’s Hot 100), Destroyer’s “Shout It Out Loud” (No. 31) and the Top 10 ballad “Beth,” Rock and Roll Over’s “Hard Luck Woman” (No. 15) and “Calling Dr. Love” (No. 16), Love Gun’s “Christeen Sixteen” (No. 25), Ace Frehley’s solo hit, “New York Groove” (No. 13) and Dynasty’s “I Was Made for Lovin’ You” (No. 11).

“Even I haven’t heard some of this stuff, but this is all part of our master plan to celebrate KISS at this milestone in our careers,” says Gene Simmons. “This box set represents us at the very beginning of our career, and documents the band’s early success and subsequent growth.”

Adds Paul Stanley: “This collection is meant for the true KISS aficionado. The packaging really captures the development of both our music and image at a very crucial period in the band’s history.”

The special set comes out after the release of Monster, their 20th studio album. Showing the band at the top of its game, Monster embodies all that is KISS and the music that first inspired them to pick up their guitars and flame-throwers and don makeup to entertain millions. Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, with longtime members guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer, return stronger than ever with their new album to continue the legacy of the spectacular larger-than-life extravaganza known as KISS.
